Truth

Lawson has been a long standing critic of objective truth. However a denial of objective truth immediately falls into a paradox for it cannot be true that there is no truth. Lawson’s early work was as a result focussed on this self-referential paradox and he argued in ‘Reflexivity: the Post modern predicament’ that the problems of self-reference are central to contemporary Western thought. In his later work ‘Closure’, he sets out a framework that seeks to overcome the paradox in denying obective truth, by demonstrating how thought and language are successful without being able to describe an ultimate reality. Lawson argues that thought and language are ways to hold the world as something and should not been taken as descriptions.
